Every T5 rebuild kit we sell can be supplied with a new input shaft pocket bearing. There are two different types fitted to the World Class T5 and they are not interchangeable, so it is worth two minutes to check which one your gearbox has before you order.
What the pocket bearing does
The pocket bearing sits in the bore at the rear of the input shaft and carries the nose of the mainshaft. It only turns when the input shaft and mainshaft are running at different speeds, so it works in every gear except direct drive. On a high mileage box it is a common source of noise and of debris in the oil.
Type 1 - Loose needle roller
Fifteen individual needle rollers with no cage holding them together. Generally the earlier arrangement.
Later boxes using this style were also fitted with an input shaft spacer, part number 1352-053-005, which keeps the needles in one place and improves oil flow through the pocket. If you find a spacer in there, you have the loose needle roller type.
Type 2 - Tapered, also called Cobra style
A single caged tapered roller bearing that comes out as one piece. Generally the later World Class arrangement. We supply genuine Timken.
How to check yours
You need the input shaft out, or at least the front bearing retainer off and the input shaft withdrawn.
- Turn the input shaft so the pocket faces upwards.
- If loose rollers fall out, or you can pick out individual needles with nothing holding them together, it is the loose needle roller type. There should be fifteen.
- If there is one solid caged bearing seated in the pocket that lifts out as a single unit, it is the tapered Cobra style.
