The Racing Solutions E36 Twin Fuel Pump Anti-Starvation Kit fits a second in-tank fuel pump to the left half of the factory saddle tank, feeding fuel across to the right half so the main pump stays submerged under sustained cornering load. Built around genuine VDO in-tank fuel pumps — the OE brand for E36 fuel system components — with E85-rated hose and EFI-grade clamps throughout.

    Why E36s starve on track

The E36 runs a saddle tank that straddles the driveshaft tunnel. The electric fuel pump and one level sender sit in the right half; the left half has a level sender only, and fuel is moved across by a suction jet pump driven by fuel return pressure. In sustained right-hand corners, fuel piles up in the left half faster than the jet pump can transfer it back. The pump pickup goes uncovered, fuel pressure drops, and the engine leans out mid-corner — the same effect as lifting, with the added risk of detonation. At speed this can happen with more than half a tank remaining.

    How the kit works

A second VDO pump is installed in the left half of the tank and plumbed to discharge into the right half. It runs off the factory pump circuit, so it is on whenever the main pump is on. The left half is drained into the right half continuously, keeping the main pump pickup covered regardless of cornering direction. The conversion is fully reversible, remains street driveable, and works with the factory fuel gauge — expect the reading to be slightly optimistic at low levels.

    Suits

    • BMW E36 1992-1999 six-cylinder — 320i, 323i, 325i, 328i
    • BMW E36 M3 — S50 and S52
    • Left- and right-hand drive: the E36 fuel tank is the same either way, pump on the right, sender on the left
    • Track day, club sprint, circuit racing and endurance use

    Kit includes

    • 2 x VDO in-tank fuel pumps
    • 1 m of 8 mm I/D E85-rated high pressure fuel hose — the tank crossover line
    • 250 mm of 10 mm I/D E85-rated high pressure fuel hose — short tails for the two large pump ports
    • 2 x 10 mm to 8 mm barbed step-up adaptors
    • 4 x 8 mm EFI hose clamps
    • 4 x 10 mm EFI hose clamps
    • Genuine wiring harness and connector, splice-in, using the same wire colours as the factory loom

    About the pumps

VDO is produced by AUMOVIO, the independent company spun off from Continental Automotive, and is the OE brand for BMW E36 fuel system components. Between 2020 and 2025 this same pump was packaged under the Continental brand, and packaging is currently transitioning back to VDO.

Depending on stock on hand you may receive either VDO or Continental branded boxes. It is the same pump, from the same manufacturer.

    Notes

    • Pump specification: 12 V, approximately 120 L/h, 3.5 bar, 43 mm pump body
    • Installation is done with the car on the ground through the access hatches under the rear seat — the tank does not need to be dropped
    • Allow around 2 hours with basic hand tools
    • All hose supplied is E85 compatible, suitable for pump fuel, E85 and ethanol blends
    • Intended for competition and track use

    Frequently asked questions

Do I need to drop the fuel tank?
No. Both the pump assembly and the left-hand sender are reached through access panels beneath the rear seat base.

Will my fuel gauge still work?
Yes. The factory senders are retained and the gauge continues to read. Accuracy at low fuel levels can drift slightly because the left half is now emptied ahead of the right.

Is it still street legal and driveable?
The conversion is entirely internal to the fuel tank and reversible. It does not change fuel pressure, and there is no drivability trade-off on the road.

My box says Continental, not VDO. Did I get the right part?
Yes. VDO and Continental branded boxes contain the identical pump. VDO is the current branding following the AUMOVIO spin-off from Continental Automotive.

    Can I run E85?
Yes. All hose supplied in this kit is E85 rated. If you are switching to ethanol blends and want the ECU to compensate automatically, pair this kit with a Haltech Flex Fuel Composition Sensor.

    Does this suit a four-cylinder E36?
The kit is proven on the six-cylinder cars. Contact us before ordering if you have a four-cylinder E36 so we can confirm your tank configuration.

Do I need a bigger main pump as well?
No. This kit solves fuel pickup, not fuel volume. If you are also chasing higher flow for a big power build, get in touch and we will spec the right combination.
