Run a GM 6L80 or 6L90 behind a Haltech Nexus ECU

The 6L80 is the six-speed automatic behind V8 VE and VF Commodores, the Pontiac G8 and the Chevrolet SS, which makes it one of the most common autos in an LS swap. Its control unit sits inside the gearbox and expects engine data from the factory GM engine computer. Take that computer out and the gearbox has nothing to work from.

The Haltech Nexus Ti6L fills that gap. It lets a Nexus ECU or VCU integrate with and control a supported GM 6L series automatic. The ECU sends engine RPM, engine demand, throttle position and engine torque, and the factory transmission control module sends back gear position, park and neutral state, torque limits and torque reduction requests.

Compatibility

Gearboxes: GM 6L80 and 6L90 running a compatible TCM operating system. If your TCM's operating system is not yet supported, Haltech will add it. The original binary has to be read out with a third-party tool and sent to Haltech support, and Haltech aims to add support within two business days.

ECUs: Haltech Nexus series ECUs and VCUs, including the Rebel LS. Elite, Platinum and older Haltech ECUs are not supported.

Shifter: Tap up and tap down must be wired external to the transmission, with shift requests sent over CAN. Haltech lists the VE and VF Commodore, Pontiac G8 and Chevrolet SS 6L80 shifters as examples.

Also required: constant battery power through an inline fuse, and the Torque Model enabled in NSP. The TCM reflash needs NSP 1.46.3, Nexus ECU firmware 1.34.0 and Ti6L firmware 1.11.0 or later.

Haltech currently lists the Ti6L as early access.

Frequently asked questions

Does the Ti6L replace the 6L80's TCM?
No. The factory TCM inside the gearbox stays. The Ti6L is the CAN link between it and your Haltech ECU.

Will it work with my Elite 2500?
No. The Ti6L needs a Haltech Nexus series ECU or VCU.

Does it suit the 6L80 out of a VE or VF Commodore?
The 6L80 is supported where its TCM runs a compatible operating system. If yours isn't on Haltech's list yet, Haltech will add it once you send them the original binary.

How long does the reflash take?
Allow 15 minutes or more. Keep the battery charged and the laptop on mains power with sleep disabled, because losing power or communication part-way through can leave the transmission inoperable.
